Tia Norton’s Las Vegas Smash team is sitting pretty in third place in the US Professional Padel League after a weekend of mixed fortunes.
The Smash, who had defeated Arkansas Matrix in their opening fixture of what is the inaugural US PPL season, were first on court against the Toronto Polar Bears on Saturday, with Tia and partner Ana Paula de la Pena in imperious form claiming a hard-fought 7-6, 6-4 victory.
In the men’s doubles, Smash duo Juan Manuel Vazquez and Pablo Amora made sure the Polar Bears were popped in the deep freeze with a 6-1, 6-2 success.
24 hours later Las Vegas were back on court, this time against the Cancun Waves and although GB No 1 Norton and ‘Palila’ posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory, the Waves surfed to a convincing straight sets victory over Amora and Vazquez in the men’s doubles to take the tie to a deciding mixed doubles.
Unfortunately it was Cancun who got the win via a 10-8 triumph in a Champions tie-break to claim a cliff-hanger victory.
All of which has left Las Vegas handily placed to mount a smash and grab raid on leaders Miami Padel, who are just one point in front of them, and who they face this Saturday.
