Calling all padel mums (or would-be padel mums) in the Reading area – mark next Wednesday (April 2nd) in your diary for a padel session dedicated to you and your children.
For Emma Powell, currently training to be an LTA Level 2 padel coach, has teamed up with the newly-opened padel club to organise a ‘Mums Who Padel’ introductory sessionfrom 11am to 12.30pm.
Mums are invited to step on court and try the sport, which is sweeping across the UK thanks to being easy to play and its incredibly social nature. Mums taking part are welcome to bring their children with them.
Emma, who has friends who have recently had children, realised there were no padel sessions specifically for mums and that padel is a great way for them to socialise and exercise.
The 32-year-old coach said: “I am very keen to get more women into padel – and hosting a session that is purely for mums is a great way to do that.
“It can be difficult for mums to find the time to play sport when they are looking after children, so this session enables them to bring their children along while they get to have a go at padel.
“My aims are to get more people especially girls and woman into sport. This is the first initiative of hopefully many as I want to introduce sessions that will also be for mums-to-be as well as new mums. This one is for all mums.”
“I’m grateful for the support of Padel Hub and also Victoria Nicholas, who I’ve known for a year, in supporting me with this.”
GB padel player Victoria Nicholas backs the initiative
GB padel international and mum-to-be Victoria Nicholas is backing the initiative.
Victoria, who competed at last year’s European Championship for Great Britain and is pregnant with her first child, due in June, said: “This is a wonderful initiative by Emma to encourage more women, and particularly mums, to play padel.
“I know it can be extremely daunting for anyone to take up a new sport and even just walk into an unfamiliar venue. Putting on a session like this – just for mums – will make it more accessible.
“I met Emma when she attended a women’s social padel session that I was running. She has gone on to complete her Level 1 padel coaching qualification and has started coaching, which is amazing. We have since spoken about sessions for mums-to-be as well as new mums.
“I’ve continued to play padel socially while pregnant and I’m certainly feeling the benefits. I’m sure other mums-to-be and new mums will benefit from the social interaction as much as the physical health benefits. I’m really pleased that Emma has seen there is an opportunity to bring more women into padel through this initiative and I look forward to supporting her,” added Victoria.
The Mums Who Padel session is £20 to include equipment and coaching. Spaces are limited to 20 participants. To book click here.
